Over in the UK, nearly 90 truckies drove in convoy through West London, for one very special young fella who’s had a rough run of late
The convoy was held in September last year for Alfie, a 17-year-old who’s fighting a form of childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma for the third time.
Alfie needs antibody therapy, so husband and wife legends Robert and Jess Holden decided to step in and help.
“We got to know Alfie through The Bradley Lowery Foundation. Bradley Lowery was a young boy from where my wife is from in The North East of England,” Robert tells Owner//Driver.
“Bradley had neuroblastoma but sadly lost his fight.”
Upon meeting Alfie, the pair wanted to do something to help and decided financial assistance for his treatment would make a huge difference.
“We discussed ways to help as Alfie needs treatment not available on the NHS. I do have an HGV class 1 licence so thought how about a truck convoy,” he says.
What Robert and Jess didn’t expect though, was just how much interest would flow in from truckies.
“This idea was put in place and within 24 hours we had 80 trucks!” Robert says.
Alfie rode shotgun in a Bentley on the day, overjoyed by all the action taking place around him, as he led the convoy.
“It means a lot to me, because it’s helping my charity and all the other charities raise awareness,” Alfie told local news.
More than £3,000 was raised for the Alfie The Champ charity, contributing to the £600,000 donation goal for his treatment.
The 2019 convoy will take place 8 September at Royal Windsor Racecourse and Alfie will lead in a truck, with his two younger brothers following in other trucks!
