Trucks to side track Bunnerungee Bridge

Temporary side track predicted to save heavy vehicles from a nine hour detour

Heavy vehicles can now access a temporary side track near Bunnerungee Bridge on the Silver City Highway in western New South Wales from November 1, saving drivers from taking taking a nine hour detour.

The Silver City Highway links Wentworth and Broken Hill.

The single-lane side track has been built and a gravel track was opened for light vehicles on October 31.

The side track surface is now being sealed and is ready for use by heavy vehicles.

The side track is a three and a half metre wide single lane road running parallel to Bunnerungee Bridge, which lies on the Silver City Highway and links Wentworth and Broken Hill.

Transport for NSW says portable traffic lights and a speed reduction of 40km/h are in place for the safety of workers and motorists.

Bunnerungee Bridge is still closed with barriers at either end to ensure vehicles do not cross it.

A permanent solution to re-open the bridge may still be a number of weeks away, Transport for NSW advises.

Transport for NSW warns that motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Transport for NSW says it thanks Wentworth Shire Council for its ongoing assistance.
