VIC fully transitioned from VicRoads to NHVR

Heavy vehicle services transition to NHVR from VicRoads finalised

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is fully operative in Victoria, continuing the borderless services transition for the heavy vehicle industry.

All the previous VicRoads on-road services transitioned to the NHVR yesterday, joining South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT under the regulator’s umbrella.

As part of the transition the NHVR will also provide escort services to the over-dimensional sector.

Under the new arrangements, NHVR safety and compliance officers will:

  • provide escorts for vehicles carrying very large items
  • conduct compliance check against permits.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto says operators will see distinctive NHVR uniforms and vehicles on Victorian roads.

“As a national regulator, the NHVR can provide nationally consistent training and enforcement methods and resources, and undertake more complex, cross-border Chain of Responsibility investigations,” Petroccitto continues.

“The borderless delivery of these services is another step towards consistency that supports productivity for operators and makes our roads safer for everyone.”

NHVR also took over heavy vehicle services in the ACT this year

The NHVR notes its on-road charge-out rate for its services is $227.00 per hour (including GST), with a minimum charge of two hours for weekdays and three hours for weekends and public holidays.

These rates and conditions are consistent with those previously applied by VicRoads.

A total of 54 staff employed by VicRoads in on and off road heavy vehicle compliance roles have joined the NHVR as part of the transition process.

New South Wales and Queensland are expected to follow suit in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
