Victorian Transport Association reminds drivers of health and safety obligations
News that the Shepparton COVID-19 cluster was able to fester due to the behaviour of a Melbourne truck driver has spurred the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) to issue a vigilance plea to the industry.
The plea comes as the Victorian government request military support road blocks for its so-called ‘ring of steel’ restrictions on travel from Melbourne.
The so-far unnamed Melbourne truck driver reportedly failed to advise contact tracing teams after testing positive that he had visited the northern Victorian town.
The state government is yet to decide what if any action to take with the truck driver now that “all necessary information” has been provided.
The VTA notes that, while the driver was permitted to travel as an essential worker, it has become clear that he engaged in activities while working that breached the conditions of his travel permit.
Transport in Victoria has remained free of restrictions
“Since COVID-19 hit us in March, the transport industry has responded magnificently to the challenges presented by the virus,” VTA CEO Peter Anderson tells members.
“Our industry quickly adapted to develop COVID Safe plans and increased personal and workplace hygiene and safety so that we could continue to service our customers and ensure consumers have had uninterrupted access to essential goods.
“That we have operated safely and without incident for six months is a testement to the professional approach operators have taken to the virus, and for that I thank every operator and their staff.
“The Shepparton incident does underscore the need, however, to ensure every operator has a COVID Safe plan in place, and that their staff – particularly drivers – are aware of their health and safety obligations under the plan.
“For drivers travelling into regional communities and interstate, there are additional requirements they must observe to prevent community transmission.
“Please continue the disciplines you have built into your businesses that have kept our industry safe to this point so that we can continue to carry out our essential work in the community.”
The VTA has information on COVID Safe plans and permitted-travel obligations available at its online Coronavirus Information page.
