Worker incident in January 2020 prompts WorkSafe prosecution

A Carrum Downs truck body manufacturer has been charged after an employee was crushed in a shipping container, WorkSafe Victoria reports.

The safety authority charged Prestige Truck Bodies (Aust) Pty Ltd with two alleged breaches of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failing to maintain, so far as was reasonably practicable, a workplace that is safe and without risk to health.

The incident was detailed in a WorkSafe safety alert at the time

The company has been prosecuted for failing to provide safe systems of work and failing to provide its workers with information, instruction or training to perform their work safely.

The charges relate to an incident in January 2020 in which an employee died after a stack of panels weighing up to 225kg each fell and crushed him as they were being unloaded from a shipping container, WorkSafe described.

The matter is set for a filing hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on October 11, 2021.
