Lindsay completes enforceable undertaking
Industry challenges bolster Lindsay’s intermodal strategy

Lindsay Australia’s enforceable undertaking (EU) following a fatality has satisfied SafeWork NSW and is now discharged, the company reports.

The EU, which was agreed following a 2015 depot accident contained eight core deliverables and 30 supporting deliverables.

Progress on them means no further action is required of the transport and logistics enterprise.

"The company worked cooperatively with SafeWork NSW to finalise the deliverables throughout the duration of the EU," listed Lindsay’s board stated in a stock exchange note.

"The various strategies implemented under the EU will bring positive workplace health and safety impact for the company, the transport industry and the broader community generally."

Meanwhile, in an investor presentation earlier in the month, Lindsay detailed a plethora of challenges to its Lindsay Transport and Lindsay Fresh Logistics arms in the past year, along with other developments.

Most of them were attributable to Covid-19 impacts to various degrees.

These included:

  • border restrictions, continual testing requirements lockdowns and operational delays
  • rising cost pressures due to supply chain issues, increasing compliance requirements and labour shortages
  • industry-wide challenges of driver shortages and aging workforce, which it believes are likely to be exacerbated as mandatory vaccinations requirements are implemented. This is seen as supporting its diversification into rail freight usage
  • equipment lead times increasing to 12-18 months due to global supply chain issues, leading a spike in second hand equipment markets. However, it notes the impact to container lead times "has been minimal".

Despite the difficulties the company stated that the transport arm’s "diversified network and service strategy combined with ongoing investment in its sites and fleet places it in a strong position to mitigate these challenges into the future".
