SA initiates mandatory truck driver jabs

Current rules apply to ‘hotspot’ jurisdictions – NSW, ACT and Victoria

South Australia is the latest Australian jurisdiction to introduce Covid-19 vaccination mandates for the freight industry.

As of 12.01am today, commercial transport and freight workers entering South Australia by road must provide evidence of at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccination if they have been in NSW, Victoria or ACT in the 14 days before their arrival.

South Australia Police (Sapol) noted that, on October 3, it emailed all current holders of this class of Essential Traveller required to provide evidence of at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccination.

The email requested permit holders provide a copy of their vaccination evidence via email to Sapol’s Central Assessment Unit.

“Evidence includes a copy of any document provided by a healthcare worker at the time of immunisation, or the Medicare certificate for those fully vaccinated.

“Once evidence is provided, the traveller’s Cross Border Permit will then be updated, with no requirement to produce the evidence on a subsequent arrival if travelling on the same permit.”

A person who is unable to produce the evidence may only enter South Australia with an exemption from the Department for Health and Wellbeing if they have a medical exemption from receiving the Covid-19 vaccine or are pregnant.

The South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) recommended heavy vehicle drivers submit vaccination evidence online to save time at the border.

“Those with a current Essential Traveller Cross Border permit are encouraged to email evidence of their vaccination to SAPOL’s Central Assessment Unit now (via the following address: SAPOL.Covid19Command@police.sa.gov.au) so as to avoid delays that may be caused by having to produce it at the time of their arrival.

“The traveller’s Cross Border Permit will then be updated, with no requirement to produce the evidence on a subsequent arrival if travelling on the same permit.

“If a traveller’s current Cross Border Travel permit expires, evidence of COVID-19 vaccination status can be submitted online when making a new registration via Sapol’s Cross Border Travel Registration.”
