Senator continues campaign to clean truck stops

Senator Glenn Sterle has provided an update on his efforts to improve the conditions in roadhouses and truck stops across Australia

In August last year, Sterle, the Shadow Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Labor Senator for WA, launched his campaign to work with companies like BP, Caltex and Shell to clean up road-side truck stops after many were forced to close throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim is to improve access and cleanliness of the stops so truck drivers can get vital rest at these facilities.

Now, Sterle has announced that more than 60 sites around Australia have had issues resolved and improved conditions for transport workers across the country.

Updated facilities included the BP truck stop on Abernethy Road in Kewdale, Western Australia, where the quality of food was fixed by hiring a new cook, and BP’s Capricorn site, where blocked toilets and out of order showers have been fixed.

Also in WA, the BP truck stop in Kalgoorlie has begun trading 24/7, with staff shortages regarding cooks currently being fixed. BP says it is continuing to review cleaning schedules for toilets and showers so they are kept open and clean.

BP is also working on improving parking permit systems, replacing showers and updating amenities at stops in Victoria (including Epping, Fitzgerald Road and Truganina) and New South Wales (Beresfield, Muswellbrook and Eastern Creek).

“I am proud to announce that since the beginning of my campaign last year to clean up roadhouses and service stations for truck drivers, we have managed to resolve issues and improve conditions for truckies at more than 60 sites around the country,” Sterle says.

“I am happy to report that BP is actively working with my office to respond to all of your concerns and complains in relation to their sites.”
