Transport industry has big part to play in reducing emissions says Isuzu

Director and Chief operating Officer of Isuzu Australia Limited Andrew Harbison has said the transport industry, in lockstep with government, has a big part to play in Australia’s effort to reduce its emissions footprint.

As new Euro emissions standards begin to come into effect in Australia and the whole transport industry slowly begins the transition to less pollutant vehicles Isuzu Australia says it’s important for government to provide clear guidelines and incentives to aid this transition.

Harbison says that while, Isuzu Australia Limited, (IAL) wholeheartedly supports the move to cleaner vehicles, its counter-productive to suggest vehicle manufacturers alone should foot the entirety of this bill.

It is expected that Euro-VI compliant engines for all new trucks sold in Australia will be required by the second half of 2025. On the other hand, Euro-6 for light vehicles is potentially a little further away due to issues around petrol fuel quality sold in the country.

Isuzu Australia says everyone involved in the road transport industry needs time to plan and prepare for the stricter limits, which for some this will mean a significant capital investment.

According to the federal government’s Green Vehicle Guide, emissions from light passenger and commercial vehicles account for 61 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions produced in Australia.

Isuzu believes the federal government could offer incentives to owners of pre-1996 trucks to upgrade to Euro-V or higher compliant truck models. This could be in the form of an accelerated depreciation or investment allowance.

The outcomes of this are as straightforward as they are beneficial, says Harbison – vastly improved emissions standards, improved overall road safety and greater efficiencies, more uptime equating to economic gains through improved productivity.
