Key freight routes in NSW that allow heavy vehicles to bypass parts of Sydney's CBD have opened two months ahead of schedule.
Roads Australia has provided a positive update on the vital Sydney M4 and M8 link works, with both projects opened to traffic earlier than expected.
One of the final major components of Transurban’s WestConnex project – the 7.5km tunnels linking the M4 at Haberfield and the M8 at St Peters – opened to traffic on January 20 – two months ahead of schedule.
The new link is expected to save users around 40 minutes on a journey between Western Sydney and Sydney Airport, allowing them to bypass 52 sets of traffic lights.

The M4 and M8 link is the third stage of the $16.8 billion WestConnex project being delivered in a partnership between the NSW government and the federal government.
Roads Australia says sustainability has been a key focus for the project, with the tunnels using sustainable materials and energy efficient technology and the project complemented by 23km of new and improved cycleways and walkways.
