Major delays expected in Melbourne CBD

Melbourne

Significant delays are expected in Melbourne’s CBD for the next two weeks, with the undertaking of tram track and overhead power upgrades on Victoria Street set to close one of the city’s major metropolitan routes.

The intersection of Victoria and Swanston streets will be closed in all directions from 10pm on Friday, August 30 until 5am on Monday, September 16.

Crews will be working around the clock to reconfigure Victoria Street, with works also set to include safety improvements for pedestrians and cyclists.

All motorists have been advised to avoid non-essential travel in the area as delays of up to 40 minutes are expected during peak periods.

Victoria Street will close between Elizabeth and Cardigan streets, while Swanston Street will close between Queensberry and A’Beckett streets.

Local detours include La Trobe, Lonsdale, Queensberry, Lygon, Elizabeth, Peel, William and King streets.

“It’s important both motorists and tram passengers plan ahead and allow extra time if they need to travel in the area while we carry out these important works,” minister for public and active transport Gabrielle Williams says.

“We thank people for their patience as crews work around the clock to replace and upgrade the tram tracks at this busy intersection.”

Access to businesses in the area will remain available throughout the tram works.

Electronic message boards will provide early warnings and encourage motorists to take wide detours through surrounding Parkville, Southbank or via Nicholson and Peel streets.
