New Bunbury Ring Road officially opens to traffic

The new road, now known as the Wilam Wadandi Highway, is now open for truck drivers to use this holiday period in south west WA

The Western Australian government has announced that its largest road project ever delivered in the state’s south west region has been officially opened to traffic.

The Bunbury Ring Road, now known as the Wilam Wadandi Highway, was opened at a ceremony over the weekend as it will now provide safety and efficiency benefits for operators in the region.

Traffic will now begin flowing on the 27km, four-lane highway that connects Forrest Highway in the north of Bunbury to Bussell Highway south of Bunbury.

“The Wilman Wadandi Highway will slash congestion in the south west, getting cars off local roads in Bunbury, improving road safety and shaving up to 20 minutes off travel times around the region,” WA premier Roger Cook says.

“I want to thank the thousands of workers that have delivered this important project, which I know will make a real difference for residents, commuters and travellers in our regions.”

The new road will divert around 15,000 vehicles from local Bunbury roads ever day, shaving travel times to and from the south west of the state by around 20 minutes.

By avoiding 13 sets of traffic lights, the new road includes five bridges, four grade-separated interchanges and 19 fauna crossings.

Moving forward, some minor works will continue across a range of areas to ensure the road is ideal for motorists throughout the holiday period.

“The opening of the Wilman Wadandi Highway marks a significant milestone for Western Australia, representing one of the largest investments in regional infrastructure ever undertaken in the State’s south west,” federal transport minister Catherine King says.

“This highway will transform travel for freight, tourists and locals by reducing congestion, improving safety and enhancing connectivity across the region.

“Projects like the Wilman Wadandi Highway showcase the federal government’s commitment to building infrastructure that delivers long-term benefits for regional communities and strengthens local economies.”
