New group forms to champion Australia’s safest truck drivers

The newly formed Knights of the Road is looking to reward truck drivers for their safety and professionalism behind the wheel

A new group has been formed to recognise and support professional Australian truck drivers for their safety and professionalism.

Knights of the Road is a new initiative to reward drivers who set the standard in safety, professionalism and care for others.

Through its Knight Commanders, who will be award-winning drivers, and Knights of the Road, who are nominated and aspiring drivers, the group aims to build pride in the profession, improve how the community sees truckies and strengthen a culture of safe and respectful driving.

“Our vision is an Australia where professional truck drivers are recognised as the true Knights of the Road – skilled, safe and efficient operators who keep the country moving, stop to help when others are in trouble, and proudly pass on their knowledge to the next generation,” the group says.

“We see a national community of drivers who look out for one another, who lead by example in safety and professionalism, and who are respected by the public for the essential role they play in our lives and our economy.”

The group was created by former NRFA president Rod Hannifey, with each Knight committing to a ‘code of the road’ to set a clear standard for safe, professional and respectful driving.

The code includes a 10-ppoint set of commitments such as giving cars extra space, keeping language respectful on the radio and using lights and engine brakes considerately.

“We’re at the beginning of the Knights of the Road journey. Over time, we’ll be sharing stories, recognising more drivers and building a community that reflects the very best of the Australian trucking industry,” the group says.

“Right now, we’re trying to track down our first Knight Commanders – drivers who’ve already been honoured as state or national Driver of the Year or Highway Hero recipients.

“If someone comes to mind, head to our Drop Us A Line section and let us know so we can recognise their contribution.”
