New NHVR maps put the heat on permit-approval processes

New tool charts problem areas when it comes to heavy vehicle permits.

A new tool has been launched to give Australia’s road authorities greater insight into identifying and resolving problems with heavy vehicle permit processes.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has unveiled heat maps following more than one year of work collating and comparing data across most of the country.

The maps highlight popular sections of the road network for access requests and the average time road authorities are taking to respond to a request.

The NHVR says it hopes the tool will allow it and road authorities to compare permit requests and help neighbouring local governments work together to address infrastructure bottlenecks highlighted on the maps that may be hindering the approvals process.

“Jurisdictions and local government associations will be able to use these maps to identify possible infrastructure requirements for their local area,” NHVR director of access Peter Caprioli says.

“The NHVR has successfully collated and compared twelve months of data to illustrate and enhance our understanding of where the blockages are positioned. This will help with addressing the concerned areas across the country.

“We understand that these obstructed areas are mainly due to road pavement conditions and maintenance infrastructure issues.”
