A five-kilometre section of the Douglas Daly region’s Fleming Road is set to be sealed following the awarding of tenders, as the Northern Territory’s regional road network continues to undergo improvements.
The upgrades will involve excavation, drainage construction and culverts, the rectification of shoulders and sealing of pavements to help lift the road to sealed road standards.
Works are projected to start in August this year and be completed by July 2025. 40 employees including five Indigenous workers and three apprentices are expected to participate on the project.
The $7.6 million tender has been awarded to Allan King & Sons Construction.
State minister for infrastructure Joel Bowden says Fleming Road’s status as a thoroughfare for industry has made these upgrades a necessary improvement to the Territory’s road network.
“Fleming Road is a key access road for the cattle industry in the Douglas Daly region who use the road to transport livestock to Darwin Port and interstate,” Bowden says.
“This is another infrastructure project that will provide significant opportunities for skills, training and employment opportunities while making a real difference to the local community.
“Sealing our roads will improve connectivity, reduce travel time and provide better protection from flooding.”
Member for Lingiari Marion Srcymgour says the upgrades to the road will be of critical benefit to all who use it.
“Sealing more of our roads provides interstate travellers greater access to alternative routes, reduces travel time, increases tourism flows and delivers greater freight efficiency,” Scyrmgour says.
“The upgrade to Fleming Road is critical to increase the useability of this route and improve public safety.”
