Penske Australia has issued a recall for 337 Western Star models in Australia over software problems impacting the vehicle’s Active Brake Assist (AEB) activation.
The recall impacts Western Star 47X, 48X and 49X models from 2019-2024, with all variants within the model included.
The software issue means brake lights may not illuminate as intended when the service brakes are automatically applied during an AEB activation.

If the brake lamps don’t work as intended, Penske warns this may increase the risk of an accident, as the vehicles aren’t compliant with Australian Design Rule (ADR) 13/00 pertaining to the installation of lighting and light signalling devices on other than L-Group vehicles.
Penske Australia says owners of impacted vehicles should contact their preferred Western Star dealer to have the software updated free of charge.
