LNG discovery off WA has Santos conducting tests

More LNG discovered off Western Australia, with research to be done on new well's potential

More liquified natural gas (LNG) has been discovered off Western Australia, with exploration company Santos announcing a 65m gross gas column in its Burnside -1ST1 well in the Browse Basin, 450km north of Broome.

According to Santos, wireline logging indicates the presence of gas throughout the relatively low-permeability sandstone interval at the site, and the reservoir penetrated in the Burnside well is within the same geological formation as nearby gas bearing fields such as Ichthys and Prelude.

Santos Vice President for Exploration Trevor Brown says the discovery is good news, but more research will be done to confirm its potential.

“It’s pleasing to make a discovery in a basin with so many developments under consideration. Further work will now be done on recovered samples to understand the reservoir characteristics and an appraisal plan will be developed to define the size of the resource,” he says.
