Volvo releases latest generation truck ESP

Volvo launches latest version of ESP technology, able to handle a wider range of vehicles

After unveiling its rigid and semi trailer-compliant electronic stability program (ESP) system in 2008, Volvo is now launching the latest version of the technology, able to handle a wider range of vehicles.

The new version ESP is able to handle both 4×2 and 6×2 rigids and prime movers, as well as multiple trailer applications.

Carl-Johan Almqvist, Volvo’s Europe-based traffic and product safety director, says the new software is available on the FE, FM and FH models, making it accessible by the widest possible audience.

The ESP system is controlled by a computer that receives information from a variety of sources, including the ABS brakes’ wheel sensors, the steering system and a gyroscope, allowing the on-board computer to instantaneously determine if the truck is about to roll over or skid.

In a skid situation, the main response is individual wheel braking, with the system braking the wheel or wheels that offer the best potential for bringing the vehicle safely back on course.

If the skid occurs on a slippery road surface or there is a high risk of roll over, the ESP reacts by lowering engine revs to reduce vehicle speed and braking individual wheels.
