WA LNG plant will drive up greenhouse gas, Greens say

LNG plant will increase greenhouse gas emissions in Western Australia by 12 percent, Greens claim

The Greens have accused the Western Australian Government of increasing the State’s greenhouse gas emissions by 12 percent in the coming years due to increased LNG developments on Barrow Island.

According to WA Greens Senator Rachel Siewert, the Gorgon Gas Project will be “disastrous” for the climate.

“Gorgons emissions will be 5.45 million tonnes a year if carbon geo-sequestration is achieved and 8.81 million tonnes a year without the greenhouse gas sequestered,” Siewert says.

“This represents either an eight or 12 percent increase on the states annual carbon footprint now.”

Exxon Mobil and Petronet announced yesterday they had signed a sales and purchase agreement (SPA) to export 1.5 million tonnes per annum of LNG from the project to southern India over the next 20 years, a move welcomed by WA Premier Colin Barnett.
