Tyre manufacturer Michelin recalls truck tyres due to concerns over their endurance

June 25, 2010

Michelin Australia has launched a voluntary recall of 1900 truck tyres following concerns over the crown’s endurance, which might cause the tyre to suffer a rapid pressure loss.

The 305/70 R22.5 XZE2+ TL 152/148L tyres were manufactured at Michelin’s factory in Spain and have the identification DOT HA 3M BJC X followed by the number( for the week and year) 4508 to 1510.

Michelin says while it “rigorously scrutinises” the performance of each tyre type sold in all of its markets according to the local running conditions in each country, there have recently been reports from fleet operators of tyre damage.

Subsequent investigations lead to the conclusion the level of crown endurance was “no longer complying with the required Michelin internal standards”.

The tyres were sold locally between December 2008 and May 2010. Operators will receive alternate products from the Michelin range which meet the specific requirements of the Australian market.

Michelin Australia plans to complete all exchanges by the end of October this year.

The appropriate Australian government and regulatory authorities have been notified, and dealers and customers are being contacted directly.

Michelin Australia is currently mailing instructions outlining the detailed process for the exchange to dealers, customers and known users of the tyres.

Users have been urged to contact the authorised Michelin tyre dealer of their choice. Users will have their tyres replaced free of charge.

Dedicated phone lines to assist users are also open from 7:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Operators can call 1800 800 538.
