Navistar pins hopes on new engine

Navistar sees new emission compliant system as a way around legal issues

July 17, 2012

The long running legal dispute between US truck, bus and engine manufacturer Navistar and virtually all their competitors appears to be drawing to a close.

Navistar has been on the receiving end of litigation from other heavy-duty engine manufacturers, such as Volvo, Daimler
and Cummins, over the company’s failure to satisfy the last round of emission laws introduced in the US, EPA10.

Navistar applied for and was granted permission to keep manufacturing non-compliant engines by paying non compliance penalties (NCP) per engine produced. This decision was also challenged in the courts.

However Navistar has just announced its new generation emission compliant system, In Cylinder Technology Plus.

This will be used to satisfy the next two rounds of emissions legislation in 2014 and 2017. The technology will combine Navistar’s existing in-cylinder reduction technology with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) after treatment.

“We have made tremendous progress with In Cylinder Technology Plus. Our goal is offer the world’s cleanest and most fuel efficient diesel engine –
benefiting both our customers and the environment for years to come,” Navistar CEO Daniel Ustian says.

Navistar is the parent company of NC2, the manufacturer of CAT trucks. However, NC2 uses CAT truck engines rather than Navistar’s MaxxForce range of heavy duty engines. The new range of ADR80/03 compliant CAT engines are expected to be available in Australia in late 2012.
