Daimler to add medium duty engines to its line-up

Daimler Trucks will offer medium duty engines in North America from 2016.

Medium duty Detroit engines will be added to Daimler Trucks’ line-up in 2016 for customers in North America.

Daimler says it will introduce the new engines, dubbed the Detroit DD5 and DD8, to provide a complete service offering.

The new DD5 and DD8 units will be offered throughout Daimler’s product portfolio which includes Freightliner, Western Star, Thomas Built Buses, and Freightliner Custom Chassis vehicles.

“Detroit medium duty engines will provide what no other manufacturer in North America can offer: a total vehicle solution that matches Daimler’s global engineering prowess with the most complete product line-up bar none in the industry,” Daimler Trucks North America president and CEO Martin Daum says.

“The DD5 and DD8 will feature attributes that are synonymous with Detroit including exceptional fuel efficiency, lowest total cost of ownership, power, performance and reliability.”

Daimler says the engines will meet impending emissions standard GHG17 ahead of time and will initially be built and shipped from Germany. The company plans to build the engines in North America in 2018.
