International launches LT truck series

To ship with latest Cummins and Navistar engines, the new LT Series is Internationals’ new flagship range

Navistar International has launched its new flagship heavy-duty truck range in the US, revealing the International LT Series over the weekend.

Fitting in the US Class 8 bracket (gross vehicle weight rating over 15 tonnes), International says the new on-highway LT Series promises fuel efficiency, uptime, and technology improvements.

“The new International LT Series reflects our vision for the future of the trucking industry, with a host of advancements that support improved driver safety and productivity, as well as fuel efficiency and uptime,” Navistar Truck and Parts president, Bill Kozek says.

“This new vehicle reflects our strong belief that integrating the best technology will provide customers with a significant operating advantage.”

Available in a number of configurations, the LT Series will be launched in day cab, 56-inch low roof sleeper, 560-inch hi-rise sleeper, 73-inch hi-rise sleeper and 73-inch sky-rise sleeper variants.

Powered by either the 2017 Cummins X15 engine or the 2017 Navistar N13 engine, the truck range will have horsepower ratings from 475hp up to 565hp.

The truck maker says it undertook “extensive research with truck drivers” to keep “with the company’s DriverFirst product design focus” in the truck’s interior.

This meant it reviewed more than 500 points of interaction between the driver and the truck, resulting in more elbow, hip and leg room.

“Driver input also led to a smart, well-designed mix of high-tech and traditional features that emphasise driver ease of use,” the truck maker says.

“The redesigned interior features a new premium gauge cluster with a digital driver display that places everything within comfortable reach, while offering drivers real-time monitoring of fuel economy and other important alerts in clear sight.

“The new display also offers up to 15 customisable digital gauges. In addition, the air horn was relocated back to its traditional, intuitive position over the driver door in response to overwhelming driver feedback.”

The aerodynamics of the truck were also altered, International says, to decrease wind noise and improve fuel efficiency.

To improve uptime, the company says it has made adjustments to the single-canister aftertreatment system, LED headlamp lenses, cab wiring, and hood and cab design.

LED headlamps are fitted into the LT range as standard, as is a column-mounted gear-shifter, reconfigured side windows that improve line of sight, and the Bendix Wingman Advanced Collision Mitigation system.

International says the improvements make the LT Series 7 per cent more fuel efficient than the 2017 ProStar with the Cummins ISX15 engine, 3 per cent of which comes from its aerodynamic benefits.

In terms of new technology offerings, the LT Series comes with International’s own predictive cruise control system that offers GPS map and route data and the ability to anticipate and analyse the best approach to upcoming terrain changes.

It can also ship with the Bendix Wingman Fusion and Meritor WABCO OnGuardACTIVE systems.

The new LT Series will begin in production in late November.
