Volvo premieres all-electric truck in Europe

Volvo's first all-electric truck, the FL Electric, has begun entering regular operation in Gothenburg, Sweden

Volvo has launched its first all-electric truck for commercial use in Europe, with first sales and series production of the new model to start in 2019.

The Volvo FL Electric will be aimed at urban distribution and refuse operations, the company said, with Swedish waste management company Renova and haulage firm TGM the first to operate the new models in Gothenburg, the home of Volvo Trucks.

The trucks will have between two and six lithium-ion batteries with up to 300kWh capacity and able to be fully charged in 1-2 hours through DC charging, or left to charge for up to 10 hours overnight through AC charging.

Volvo Trucks Australia vice president Mitch Peden says the emission-free vehicles are also suitable for night work in noise sensitive areas, as well as for use in environmental zones and in indoor terminals.

“An electric vehicle solution for a range of urban applications has been a global priority of Volvo Trucks, and we look forward to offering this cutting edge technology to operators in Australia and New Zealand in the future,” Peden adds.

“As always, in line with our core value of quality, Volvo Trucks Australia will not bring anything to market without the extensive validation and testing required for the unique and challenging conditions of Australia and New Zealand.”

Head of strategy for the Volvo FL and FE Jonas Odermalm says the company is also working with suppliers of charging equipment to find the best way of meeting customer needs regarding driving cycles, load capacity, uptime, range and other parameters.

“Such a solution may encompass everything from route analysis and battery optimisation to servicing and financing,” he says.

The first of Volvo Truck’s FL Electric range have entered operation in Gothenburg.
