Advanced Freightliner features to arrive here next year

Award-winning SAE level 2 Cascadia seen as setting safety bar high

Certain technical advances promised for Freightliner trucks in the US can be expected to make it across the Pacific, the brand’s local arm pledges.

Parent firm Daimler Trucks used the recent Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to announce a new Cascadia with Society of Automation Engineers (SAE) level 2 capability, to be launched this year.

Daimler describes it as “the first-ever partially automated series production truck on North American roads” and it seems Australia is set to share a portion of that a little down the track.

“We are excited to be part of a company that is investing so much in driver assistance technologies that will help our customers in the real world,” Freightliner Australia director Steve Downes says.

“We look forward to introducing some of the features showcased in Las Vegas to Australia with the Freightliner Cascadia next year.

“We are confident it will set new standards for safety and connectivity in the Australian market.”

Freightliner will confirm the detail of its leading safety and connectivity package closer to the launch of the new Cascadia, which is currently undergoing extensive Australian testing.

In Las Vegas, the new Cascadia ended up winning the Best Transportation Technology gong at the Best of CES awards

“With the new Cascadia, we aim to significantly reduce both accidents and fuel consumption with advancements in automation, helping the truck drivers do their job with more safety and with less fuel,” Daimler Trucks North America president and CEO Roger Nielsen says.

“We are facing more trucks on the road with increased hauling demands, regulatory pressures and ongoing global concerns over energy resource depletion.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative that we continue to innovate and push our engineering solutions striving, above all, for safety and helping our customers to run their business efficiently.”
