Toll puts electric truck to work around Sydney

Vehicle on real-world trial at Bungarribee express parcels site

Toll is deploying the Fuso eCanter on a real-world metro delivery trial in Australia, months after introducing the vehicle to its Japanese fleet.

The vehicle will be put to use at the Bungarribee distribution centre in Sydney as the peak parcel season ramps up.

The firm notes over the coming two weeks, Express Parcels executive general manager Alan Beacham and the division will run a real-world trial to gain operational insights into how the vehicle technology “can help our customers meet demand for cleaner and quieter urban deliveries”.

“At Toll Group, we ensure that any standard or custom equipment we operate is tried and tested,” Toll says in a short statement.

“We’re proud to welcome the latest generation FUSO eCanter to our Bungarribee site in NSW.

“The light-duty all-electric vehicle is perfectly suited to operate late-night and early-morning pickup and delivery services in the Sydney metropolitan area.”

Toll deployed two eCanters to its fleet to operate pickup and delivery services for Toll Express Japan in Tokyo in April this year.

“Whilst electric vehicles can easily be integrated into our operations and handle freight effectively with positive feedback from our drivers, the main hurdle to date has been the economic case for them,” operational services president Peter Stokes said at the time.

“The Fuso eCanters mark a significant milestone for us with the alignment of price, performance and the energy density of batteries in supporting adoption of this technology in Japan.

“We hope other markets will follow suit and we remain actively engaged with our partners towards incorporating electric vehicles into our fleet.”
