Safer Fuso Canter launched in Japan

Upgraded model gets a 'tech and conceptual update' for first time in a decade

Fuso’s eCanter may be front and centre of recent developments but its traditional Canter model has seen a new upgrade launched in Japan, where it will be available in November.

The new Canter is the first light-duty truck in Japan to come standard with the advanced safety feature Active Sideguard Assist, which alerts when it detects a risk of collision when the driver is steering to the left or has turned on the left-turn signal.

This joins the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) already included in the previous model.

The new Canter also features a redesigned face that combines historical brand design cues, an agility reflective of light-duty transport, and a “Modern and Solid” concept, while the sleek lines of the cab integrate LED headlights and represent both a technological and conceptual update after 10 years, Fuso’s parent company Daimler explains.

Daimler delivers finer Fuso

The updated model comes with the Fuso Truckonnect telematics platform, which has already been introduced to Fuso’s heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks, as well as the eCanter.

The 96kW (130hp) 4P10 (T2) engine comes with a six-speed Duonic 2.0 transmission.

The truck also features a keyless press-and-turn engine switch and an Easy Access System, where “drivers can lock or unlock the vehicle by simply pressing a switch on the door handle, as long as the remote key is in the vicinity of the door”.

“Over the past decades, MFTBC [Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation] has made continuous improvements to its light-duty truck in order to cater to customer needs,” a Daimler statement notes.

“This iteration of the Canter, with its upgraded design, advanced safety features, and connectivity functions, aims to bring a new level of safety and efficiency on the road.”
