Gary Bone moves from Mack back to Volvo

Volvo Group switch follows Tony O’Connell taking up Volvo Malaysia MD post

A Volvo Group Australia personnel change sees Mack Trucks vice president Gary Bone take on the role of Volvo Trucks vice president.

The move follows the recent promotion of Tony O’Connell to managing director of Volvo Trucks Malaysia.

Bone has 17 years’ experience with Mack and Volvo Group Australia, initially starting out in Mack retail sales.

Since then, he has held a number of roles, including two years in the US with the Mack brand, before assuming the position of senior vice president of Mack Trucks Australia from 2005 to 2008, and as vice president of Volvo Trucks Australia from 2009 to 2013.

Bone rejoined Volvo Group Australia as Mack vice president in March 2020 after more than five years at the helm of Chesterfield Australia.

“In a rapidly changing transport environment, I am delighted to see Gary back at the helm of the Volvo Trucks brand,” Volvo Group Australia president and CEO Martin Merrick says.

“We have just launched an amazing new line up of Volvo Trucks onto the Australian market and Gary will be well placed to steer the Volvo brand into a future that will see significant advancement in the next decade.”

Bone assumes his new role immediately.

“I feel privileged to be climbing into the driver’s seat of the Volvo brand at this point in its history,” he says.

“Our best range ever is hitting the road this year, our electrification journey has begun and we now have some of the safest, smartest, most connected heavy vehicles on the Australian market with an aftermarket offering second to none.

“Our strength as Volvo Group Australia is the ability to find the right transport solution for our customers, from medium duty urban distribution to long haul cab-over and conventional.

“Our brands work together to make this happen and our people make the difference.

“There’s always a special place for the Mack brand in my heart and I look forward to working closely with my successor at Mack to continue to drive innovation and success in the Australian transport industry.”

Merrick will be Mack Trucks Australia acting vice president until the position is filled.
