Iveco’s medium-duty Eurocargo range expands with the addition of a new dual-control variant for more compact waste-removal applications.

Available on the 4x2 Euro5 (EEV) ML160 platform with shortened 4455mm wheelbase, the new model is manufactured at Iveco’s Brescia facility in Italy and features ‘predisposition’ for dual control.

This allows more efficient fitment of the additional system componentry in Australia, Iveco notes.

Components to engineer the dual control Eurocargo are from Iveco-sourced parts kits, which provide seamless integration of the system, resulting in more efficient fitment process.

The ML160 dual-control platform is designed to be compatible with a number of leading side loader compactor bodies with volumes of up to 15 cubic metres, an optimal size that delivers considerable payload benefits while still offering strong manoeuvrability and a lower GVM compared to traditional 6x4 refuse collection vehicles.

The truck is powered by a 5.9-litre, six-cylinder Euro 5 (EEV) engine producing 280 horsepower and 950 Nm of torque and is coupled to a 5-speed Allison S3000 full automatic transmission, the preferred option for refuse collection work thanks to its ease of use and durability.

Responding to customer demand, Iveco ANZ product manager Marco Quaranta says the new model is ideal for work in gated communities, many of which had private access roads with gross vehicle mass (GVM) limits.

"There’s a growing trend in Australia towards higher density living and it’s changing the way waste needs to be collected," Quaranta says.

"Load restrictions on some roads and more restrictive infrastructure as a whole, means that operating a full sized compactor in these areas can be a challenge, which makes the more compact Eurocargo an ideal platform for a dual-control model.

"The Eurocargo already has smaller dimensions than many compactors in the market, but with a shortened wheelbase of 4,455mm, this provides exceptional maneuverability while still accommodating a 15m³ compactor body and up to five tonnes of payload."

For a more comfortable ride and reduced damage to road infrastructure, the dual control Eurocargo features rear electronically-controlled air suspension (ECAS), while the rear axle includes a driver-controlled differential lock should additional traction be required.

Braking on the vehicle comes courtesy of front and rear ventilated disc brakes with electronic stability program, ABS and anti-skid regulator.

Other features include a European-designed and appointed cabin that places a high emphasis on ergonomics, including reduced noise and high comfort levels, leading to a more relaxed driving experience.

A variety of models were locally trialled with leading waste service provider Suez before launch, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, Quaranta says.

"Operators have confirmed with us that the Eurocargo’s size and payload strike a great balance between manoeuvrability and productivity," he says.

"The drivers are also commenting favourably and have specifically referenced the trucks’ superior turning circle and wonderful visibility – operating the Eurocargo in confined areas is far less stressful than using a full size compactor.

"We are already receiving strong orders for the new model which is pleasing to see, and confirms to us that this is a growing market segment."

For customers wanting an even lighter vehicle, Iveco can also supply a dual control to order based on the smaller ML140 platform.
