The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) has issued a North Queensland safety alert due to an increase of trucks going through Charters Towers.
Recent floods this week has seen the Bruce Highway been closed in certain areas, meaning more traffic is heading through other roads.
The QTA says there’s an increased number of heavy vehicles travelling through Charters Towers and has advised all drivers to exercise caution and patience when driving through the town, particularly around corners and at intersections.

“The Charters Towers community recognises the importance of the trucking industry and respects the role they play in servicing communities,” the QTA says.
“In return, please show respect to the people in the community by taking due care when driving through town and demonstrate safe driving practices.
“We understand the frustration of having to divert onto alternate routes and the delays this may cause, however, we are asking you to consciously make a decision to drive smart and drive safely, the same way you would drive around in your own towns and suburbs were your families and friends live.”
