The Queensland transport industry has started closing and preparing for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Alfred as it gets closer to land.

Despite being initially predicted to hit land today over south-east Queensland, the latest news is the tropical cyclone is delayed, meaning it may last longer than initially expected.

Businesses in the region are moving quickly to prepare for the natural disaster, with some spaces closing while transport companies in 21 local government areas are ready to work around the clock and keep the supply chain moving.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has advised that bookings for Monday March 10 at the Lismore Heavy Vehicle Inspection Site (HVIS) have been cancelled, with the cyclone meaning all new bookings are currently closed.

“We are currently attempting to contact all impacted operators to advise and arrange alternate bookings,” the NHVR says.

When it comes to the supplier side, Brown and Hurley has decided to close its Caboolture, Darra and Yatala branches from today until Sunday.

“We will continue to manage parts and service inquiries via phone direction,” Brown and Hurley says.

Brisbane Isuzu has followed the Queensland government’s advice and has closed all four of its dealerships in the region from today, with the plan being to resume regular trading on March 10.

This means its dealerships in Archerfield, Burpengary, Eagle Farm and Stapylton are all currently closed.

With the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) advising it’s not safe to travel on roads today and tomorrow due to expected flooding and high winds, Eurocold has also closed its Rocklea depot and Berrinba production facility.

Penske Australia and New Zealand has closed its Wacol, Lytton and Yatala branches in south-east Queensland for the rest of the week, adding to the list of companies bunkering down to ride through the cyclone.
