Queensland operator celebrates 90 years of transport runs

While the Richers family may have only gotten into trucking due to a vehicle given in lieu of wages, the operator has now made freight its own

Queensland based transport operator Richers Transport is proudly celebrating its 90th anniversary of operating truck services along Australia’s eastern seaboard.

The company was founded in 1935 when Walter Richers was given a truck in lieu of wages that were owed to him at the time as an ice vendor delivering ice to Maryborough residences.

The T Model Ford was put to work after ice deliveries were carried out in the early hours of the morning, with Richers obtaining other work.

“From these humble beginnings, the company has now established itself as a major provincial carrier, running the eastern seaboard of Australia,” Richers Transport says.

Nowadays, the company is run by the second generation of the Richers family, with Graham Richers the managing director. The third generation is also working in the company.

The Richers Transport fleet consists of more than 450 units including prime movers, flat tops, taut liners, extendable and drop deck trailers, rigid trucks and forklifts.

As recently as last year, the operator had roughly 200 employees across seven sites in south-east Queensland, with its vehicles travelling 14 million kilometres each year.
