The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has released its preferred solution for key upgrades to the Bruce Highway in Brisbane’s north.
The preferred solution between Anzac Avenue and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road includes adding an additional northbound and southbound lane in the existing median between Anzac Avenue and Uhlmann Road to increase capacity from three to four lanes in each directions.
This will also include multi-lane, one-way collector-distributor roads on both sides of the highway between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.
TMR has revealed collector-distributor roads have been identified as the most viable solution between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road, including three interchanges and service centre accesses in close proximity.
These roads will separate shorter trips from highway traffic, distributing shorter trips to local roads while reducing the number of highway access points.

The Department says it “thoroughly investigated” the potential of adding northbound and southbound lanes between Uhlmann Road and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road but ruled it out due to the number and close proximity of existing interchanges and service centre accesses.
It says frequent traffic merging and weaving would cause “significant disruption to traffic flow”, with investigations confirming additional traffic lanes alone wouldn’t meet the needs of the rapidly growing region in the future.
TMR says technical investigations alongside community consultation feedback back in October and November 2023 informed the development of the preferred solution.
This update allows TMR to discuss future, sensitive property matters with nearby landowners where impacts can’t be avoided, with those impacted invited to have their say on the solution by September.
TMR says total funding requirements will be confirmed when a construction contract is awarded.
