Territory lifts truck restrictions on Barkly

Full heavy vehicle access granted along the Barkly Highway after restrictions were lifted following flooding last month

Full heavy vehicle access has been granted along the Barkly Highway after restrictions were lifted following flooding last month.

The Territory Government today restored legal load limits for trucks, which were previously limited to 80 percent.

The highway, which was significantly damaged by floods, has also opened to two-way traffic, with the Government also allowing vehicles to travel at night.

Construction work is still continuing on a section of the route, and workers are not expected to finish for another two weeks.

The reconstructed section of the Barkly Highway has opened for the two-way movement of traffic.

Although it has lifted load limit restrictions, the Government has decided against granting over-mass vehicles access.

The floods were blamed for crippling industry productivity, with claims some drivers were forced to travel an extra 2000km per trip.
