Truck driver will face court charged with defrauding Melbourne’s tollways.
A truck driver’s audacious quest to dodge toll fees in Melbourne has ended, with Victoria Police charging him with almost 300 tollway-related offences.
The 42-year-old driver will face court on August 25 accused of using false numberplates and inappropriate electronic billing tags on daily basis to travel on toll roads for free.
The driver is charged with obtaining financial advantage by deception, using false numberplates, unlicensed driving, travelling in an unregistered vehicle, stealing diesel and towing an unregistered trailer.
Victoria Police’s heavy vehicle unit charged the driver following a four week investigation that allegedly found offences dating back to January.
“People think if they use false plates or cover up their rego numbers and they won’t get caught,” senior constable Chris McCran says.
“That’s not the case. There are a number of other ways that we can detect drivers trying to defraud the system.”
The driver has been bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 25.
