Traffic to be impacted on Bruce Highway due to pavement testing works

The next stage of the landmark $9 billion works package will see TMR conduct pavement testing along key parts of the highway this month

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has announced it will be carrying out pavement testing along the Bruce Highway as part of the ongoing major package of safety works for the notorious freight route.

The pavement testing, which will occur between Rungoo and Woree, is required to inform designs for the Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program.

This program is a $9 billion package of works jointly funded by the federal and Queensland governments, and is the single largest investment made to the Bruce to target reducing the severity and frequency of crashes.

The testing will be carried out along the highway in Rungoo, Cardwell, Ellerbeck, Bilyana, Silky Oak, Friday Pocket, El Arish, Common Loop, South Innisfail, Innisfail, Fitzgerald Creek, Edmonton and Woree.

Testing gets underway from October 7 in Rungoo and works north to the other sites, with crews set to be onsite between 6am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday, with occasional night shifts occurring between 6pm and 6am when required.

TMR says the testing is expected to be completed in five weeks.

For the safety of road users and maintenance crews, changed traffic conditions will be in place including temporary speed limit reductions, and single lane operation under coordination of traffic controllers and/or traffic signals while the testing is carried out.

Nearby properties may experience noise associated with the works, such as the sound of trucks, light machinery and vibrations while the work is carried out.

TMR says the contractor will take all reasonable and practicable actions to minimise impacts and any disruptions to property owners, as well as other stakeholders.

Variable Message Signs will also be in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware in advance of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates due to poor weather will be posted on the VMS.
