Tropical Cyclone Sean causes Port Hedland freight route delays

The flooding caused by the cyclone has closed the North West Coastal Highway and other roads in numerous spots

The current tropical cyclone Sean that is raging through Western Australia’s northern coast has led to various major freight routes being closed or having reduced access.

The main road hit has been the North West Coastal Highway, which has been closed in numerous places around Port Hedland due to flooding caused by the cyclone.

Around the city of Karratha, the highway has been closed between Pannawonica turn off and the town due to flooding, while the Manuwarra Red Dog Highway is closed between the North West Coastal Highway and Millstream Road.

Nanutarra Munjina Road is closed between the Manuwarra Red Dog Highway to Hammersley Road, while Marble Bar Road is only open to high clearance four-wheel drives and trucks.

Around this, many sections of the North West Coastal Highway remain open, but Main Roads WA is warning drivers to exercise extreme caution when travelling through the area.

In Exmouth at Minilya Exmouth Road and around at Karratha these restrictions are in place.

The flooding has extended along the North West Coastal Highway all the way up to the Northern Territory border, with the latest updates this morning suggesting the flooding is yet to ease on the major freight route.
