Truck driver faces court over Sydney Harbour Bridge spill

Rear door of trailer became unlatched, causing debris to spill onto Sydney's Harbour Bridge.

A truck driver will face court next month after his rig lost its load and left a trail of dirt on Sydney’s Harbour Bridge.

New South Wales Police issued the driver with a  court attendance notice and several defect notices following the January 22 incident that happened just past the southern toll booths of the bridge.

The northbound driver was hauling 20 tonnes of landfill when police believe the rear door of the trailer became unlatched, causing the debris to spill onto a lane of bridge.

“The driver, a 61-year-old man was unaware of the spill and continued north across the bridge until he was stopped by police on the Warringah Freeway near the Falcon Street underpass,” a statement from NSW Police says.

“Approximately 3km of roadway was contaminated with the debris, which took three hours to remove with the use of bobcats and road sweepers.”

The driver is due to appear in court on February 26 to answer charges of not complying with loading requirements.

“The vehicle was also inspected and issued several defect notices,” NSW Police says.
