Volvo and Kenworth tie for May truck sales numbers

There's a battle going on for the spot of number one heavy truck seller in Australia.

In a dramatic finish to the heavy vehicle truck sales for May, two huge heavy vehicle brands have tied.

The number 307 features twice on the heavy duty truck results table for May 2023 in Australia, with the brands Volvo and Kenworth next to them.

The tie for top spot reflects a closely fought battle for leadership in the heavy truck sector with Volvo now listed as having sold 1,301 units for the year to date to May, and Kenworth 1,286 for the same period.

Third spot on the table for May went to Isuzu with 212 vehicles sold in the category, placing them at third overall for the year with 919 sales, accounting for 14.3 per cent of sales this year.

The top 10 was rounded out with Scania (159), Mack (89), UD Trucks (85), DAF (85), Hino (68), Mercedes-Benz (66) and Fuso (60).

Overall, the commercial vehicle segment data collected by the Truck Industry Council, including heavy vans, showed a total of 4270 vehicles sold in Australia in May and 18,341 for the year-to-date.

In the Medium Duty segment Isuzu topped the table for May with 363 trucks sold, adding to its total sales for the year so far of 1457, equating to 50.4 per cent of the 2,891 units sold in the segment for the year to date.

 Hino sold 178 trucks in the segment in May, coming in at number 2, followed by Fuso (116), UD Trucks (8), MAN (7), Mercedes-Benz (6), Iveco (3), DAF (2), and Volvo (1).

In the Light Duty segment Isuzu continues to dominate, moving 658 trucks in May and 3,129 units for the year so far.

It’s closest competitor in this segment was Hino with 322 units sold, followed by Fuso (282), Fiat (97), Mercedes-Benz (83), Iveco (68), Hyundai (22), Volkswagen (8) and Renault (5).

The Light Duty market overall has recorded 6,744 truck sales year to date to May 2023.
