The Western Australian government has announced a further $9.5 million funding will go into its Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Rebate Scheme.
With light trucks included in the scheme, mid-year projections expect there to be an increased demand for the fund in 2025 and beyond.
The scheme provides a $3,500 rebate for people who purchase an eligible vehicle and apply to the department of transport, with applications to be accepted until midnight on Saturday May 10, 2025.
Up until November 30 this year, 9,200 ZEV rebate applications had been paid in a total of $32.2 million.

To be eligible for the scheme, the vehicle must be zero-emissions and fully powered by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells, be light vehicles (with a GVM of 4.5 tonnes or less) such as light trucks, be granted a vehicle licence in WA on or after May 10, 2022, have a maximum dutiable value of $70,000 or less and be brand new or never previously registered in Australia or overseas.
The department’s licensing data suggests the number of EVs in WA has increased by more than 513 per cent between the end of 2021 and June 30 this year.
“Based on the Treasury’s updated forecasts for the Zero Emission Vehicle Rebate, the WA government has approved a further $9.5 million investment in the scheme to fund the eligible ZEV rebate applications expected to be received before closing on May 10, 2025,” WA minister assistant the transport minister David Michael says.
“There has been significant growth in the number of electric vehicles on WA roads over the past three years, and for the first time EVs made up more than 1 per cent of WA’s light vehicle fleet in the June 2024 quarter.
“I expect as more affordable EVs are made available to the WA market, more Western Australians will look to make the switch to zero-emission vehicles, increasing interest in the ZEV rebate.”
