Work has started on upgrading a section of the Bruce Highway near the Sunshine Coast to improve safety.
The Federal Government has allocated $4.6 million to the Gardners Road and Pomona Connection Road intersections between Cooroy and Gympie.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese says the project will realign Gardners Road by relocating its intersection with the highway to the south.
“Dedicated left and right turn lanes off the highway will also be constructed at both intersections and safety barriers and additional lighting installed,” he says.
The project will be completed in mid-2014. Funding for the project has come from the Federal Government’s Bruce Highway Safety Package, which has bene used to bankroll the construction of rest stops and overtaking lanes and the removal of black spots.
Albanese says the package has already financed 50 new overtaking lanes, fixed more than 100 black spots between Caboolture and Cairns, built 24 new rest areas and stopping places and upgraded 11 existing facilities.
