Works to repair busy Western Highway section for grain trucks

The major works will update a one kilometre stretch of the Western Highway used heavily by the state’s grain industry

The Victorian government has revealed that major repairs are underway to fix a busy section of the Western Highway for grain trucks.

As part of the state government’s $964 million road maintenance blitz, crews have started rehabilitation works on a one kilometre stretch of the Western Highway in Lawloit between Kaniva and Nhill.

This section of highway helps move thousands of tonnes of grain from farms across the region to storage facilities at Nhill each year, meaning the works support the state’s $4.4 billion grain industry.

The highway also acts as a major link between South Australia and western Victoria, keeping millions of tonnes of freight from Melbourne to Adelaide safe each year.

With the works expected to take two months to finish, Victorian roads and road safety minister Melissa Horne says major repairs are also underway in Beaufort and Trawalla on the highway.

““Our crews are working tirelessly to rebuild, repair and resurface roads right across the state as part of our $964 million investment in road maintenance,” Horne says.

“We’re rebuilding this stretch of the Western Highway to ensure the road is more resilient to handle larger, heavier trucks that are getting goods to market—supporting the farmers, freight operators, and families who rely on it every single day.”

Between now and June, crews are completing thousands of individual projects to rebuild, repair and resurface Victorian roads relied on by drivers across the state.
